Luke 2:8-12
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Devotional
At various places in scripture Jesus is referred to as the Lamb of God. He was the ultimate Passover Lamb. So, in order for the words of prophesy spoken by Micah to be fulfilled, Jesus had to be born in Bethlehem.
“But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.” Micah 5:2 (NASB)
I didn’t really know or comprehend any of their profound when I found that I had memorized the words that Linus spoken in the holiday cartoon, “Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown”. But, as he shared those words year after year with the entire viewing audience, I like Mary I found that those words were something I came to treasure in my heart. The true reason for Christmas.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for coming to earth so many years ago, to take on human flesh and be born the pure, spotless lamb. Thank You for being my ultimate Passover lamb and saving me from my sins. Amen.
