Homeschool Club:
Exploring God’s Creation through STEAM
Homeschool Club is an outreach ministry of First Up Children’s Ministries through First Methodist Church Oviedo. It was created with the goal of creating a homeschooling community for our students & families.
Our Teachers:
Ms Katie and Ms Heather are both former teachers, current mothers, and members of First Methodist Oviedo. Combined we have over 20 years of teaching experience, over a variety of subject matter. Ms Heather has her Masters in Science education, and helps to develop hands-on science materials that we use weekly. As educators, we have worked with a wide age range of students, and know that creating a love of learning begins by meeting students where they are at, in their interests, and fostering positive relationships.
Wednesdays
9:30am - 1:30pm
Our day begins with one of our rotating specials, we follow with a hands-on STEAM challenge or activity, then we play on the playground & then have free-play until pickup in the gymnasium.

Silent Sustained Reading (SSR)
Bring a book (or borrow one of ours), bring a stuffy, we’ll make the snacks, and LET’S READ!!!
We have a variety of texts available for readers of all ages & interests.
During this time, our main goal is to help encourage an intrinsic love of reading. We also hope to help develop the life-long skill of reading & focusing while around others (and allowing for others to read/focus while around us). -

Service Projects
Students will help our campus & community by completing service projects. Some past projects include:
-Making Christmas cards - students used stamps (and their own creativity)to create over 250 Christmas cards! What began as individual crds then evolved into a production line! These cards were then included in the Stockings for our Palm Valley Residents, and also sent to the students & residents at Residing Hope (formerly the United Methodist Children’s Home)-Writing encouraging notes - students used chalk and wrote encouraging messages on the sidewalk to the students of Oviedo High School following some recent tragedies.
-Helping on campus - most recently, students were able to help move the toy donations that our church collected for residents of Orlando Union Rescue Mission. We had staff who needed help loading their car to deliver the toys, & our students were beyond enthusiastic to help!

Show & Tell
A fan favorite: students are welcome to bring in something that they’d like to share about from home.
We take this time to practice speaking in front of others, and listening to our peers.
Things to note: while we currently don’t limit the amount of items that a student may bring in to share with the group, we do try to give each student as close to equal amounts of time as possible.
